A short poem by Susan Gately
[New City Magazine – August-September 2020, page 23]
The birds are having a ball!
Hanging on for dear life
Furiously hammering, chafing
Gorging themselves
One by one
Large and small:
Blackbird, robin.
Chaffinch, sparrow:
Each gives way to the next
A lark of love
And nothing gets wasted
As below others wait
In happy expectation
Hoovering up the crumbs
Generously hewn
For all to share.
